Apologia Science #Giveaway

We normally just take our dog to the vet.

Actually, it isn’t a very normal experience.  Because I dread going to the vet more than my dog.

It’s work.  Ruth sheds.  She hates to be weighed more than I do.

Don’t get me wrong, we have a great veterinarian.  And the kids?  They love going.  They get to feed Ruth as many dog biscuits as they want.

A treat that is not a common occurrence around here.  It makes them feel magnanimous.

So we went to the vet yesterday.

All.  Four. Five of us.

A Confession

I have to admit, I vaccinated my dog.  My only child to be fully immunized.  Sigh.  However, she has the bare minimum. . . . like rabies.

Since she likes to kill squirrels and bite raccoons.

I even scooped up her poop.  Because we have kids, we don’t want a dog who has worms.  To top it all off, I put the poop in my mother-in-law’s refrigerator.

That went over real well.  {insert sarcasm} Good thing I didn’t tell her until right before we left.  (It sat next to her coffee creamer . . . that she uses a lot.  Shh!!)

The Surprising Thing I Did:  Thanks to Apologia

Amidst the fur flying, nail trimming, child acrobatics, I asked our veterinarian a question.

The kind of question that I would have DIED of embarrassment had my mom done this in front of me.

“We are studying canines in science right now.  Would you mind sharing some information with us about canines?”

I literally think the room got silent for 7 seconds.  The kids looked at me not knowing what to do next.  Their eyes curious and round like saucers.

And then a beautiful thing happened.

We learned about canine domestication and how the Pekinese launched the world into having dogs as pets rather than solely for work.

If you use your imagination, as the Chinese did, the Pekinese resembles a lion.

Way back when, the Chinese valued the lion . . . (maybe they still do).  As a result,  key traits were bread into the Pekinese to have it resemble an animal a trillion times its size.

Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Dowager Cixi, said:

Let the Lion Dog be small; let it wear the swelling cape of dignity around its neck; let it display the billowing standard of pomp above its back.

Let its face be black; let its forefront be shaggy; let its forehead be straight and low.

Let its body be shaped like that of a hunting lion spying for its prey.

Let its feet be tufted with plentiful hair that its footfall may be soundless and for its standard of pomp let it rival the whick of the Tibetans’ yak, which is flourished to protect the imperial litter from flying insects.

And for its color, let it be that of the lion – a golden sable, to be carried in the sleeve of a yellow robe; or the colour of a red bear, or a black and white bear, or striped like a dragon, so that there may be dogs appropriate to every costume in the Imperial wardrobe. (Wikipedia Pekingese)

The introduction of the dog into the household was further popularized with Queen Alexandria. (This is a silent film.)

Dogs began to be one’s claim to fame . . . or a status symbol.  Who needs a big diamond when you can have a dog that does tricks?

Which brings us to Ruth.

Hardly a status symbol.  But certainly a valuable and entertaining addition to our family.

All That To Say

All that to say, I find myself doing the craziest things and asking weird questions, because of what we learn in Science with Apologia.

And I want to help you be a homeschooling family that asks your community helpers questions that embarrass your children.

But also, captivate them.

Apologia is giving away a textbook and a notebook to two of my readers.

Choose Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day

Zoology 2 Exploring Creation with

and your choice of Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day Notebooks . . .

Zoology 2 Notebooking Journal  or Zoology 2 Junior Notebooking Journal

OR

which will be accompanied with . . . . a note booking journal.

Zoology 3 Notebooking Journal or Zoology 3 Junior Notebooking Journal

What is Our Favorite Apologia Science textbook?

When I was planning our school year, a disagreement arose between the brothers.

Asher was adamantly opposed to studying Swimming Creatures.  And Ezra desperately wanted to learn about fish, dolphins and sharks.

And then I had a realization.

Why can’t we study both?

It has worked perfectly.  One day we read Land Animals and Asher works in his notebook.

The following day we learn about Swimming Creatures and I help Ezra complete his junior notebook.

Because we follow the Classical model of education, my goal right now isn’t to have the children master their appointed subjects.  I want to expose them to all of God’s creation . . . laying a foundation for future learning.
